After this ESAP, the APSR Secretary General reported the following:

Recently, the APSR has supported the Hong Kong Thoracic Society and the American College of Chest Physicians (Hong Kong and Macau Chapter) in organizing an Educational Seminar of the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (ESAP): Tuberculosis in the Asia-Pacific region in the 21st Century (March 29, 2008).

I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to join the seminar personally, and it was a really successful event. There were about 400 participants and outstanding speakers from Japan, USA, China and Hong Kong. The topics covered the local epidemiology in Asia-Pacific region, an overview of tuberculosis control in China, and the impact tuberculosis has on lifestyles. Other emergent topics included the recent advances in diagnosis of tuberculosis infection, immunopathogenesis and the potential for vaccine development, as well as the multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in Asia-Pacific Region. The speakers explored in depth the local regional problems, the future possibilities to improve diagnosis, contemporary treatment, and chemotherapy.

This Educational Seminar was also a great success in raising people’s concerns about this disease, helping them to know more about how it might affect people’s life, and what could people and the governments do to combat this disease. As tuberculosis is a prevailing disease in Asia-Pacific, I believe it was right for APSR to assist this event. It is our obligation to improve people’s health and I hope this is a good start on lung healthcare in Asia-Pacific region.

The following announced the ESAP held at the JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong, one day before the Annual Scientific Meeting 2008 (ASM 2008) of the Hong Kong Thoracic Society (HKTS) and the American College of Chest Physicians (Hong Kong & Macau Chapter) (ACCP).

This ESAP is being co-organized by the HKTS and the ACCP, with support from the APSR and the Hong Kong Tuberculosis, Chest and Heart Diseases Association. It is a one-day meeting and we are anticipating about 150 doctors and allied health professionals attending the Seminar.

We are very pleased to have renowned speakers from China, Japan and USA to address on this issue as well as our local experts. Your attendance will be assured to be a valuable one.

Immediately following the ESAP, on 30 March 2008, we will have our Annual Scientific Meeting 2008 (ASM 2008) co-organized by the HKTS and the ACCP. This is an annual scientific activity of the two societies. Each year, we have about 400 doctors and allied health professionals attending the meeting. We have offered a special rate for those interested to attend both meetings.
