APSR ANNUAL CONVENTION POSTGRADUATE COURSE ON POINT OF CARE ULTRASOUND (POCUS)

10 November 2025 Manila, Philippines at APSR Congress 2025

Date:

10 November 2025

Organizing Committee:

Dr. Albert Albay  (Postgraduate Course Director)
Dr. Ralph Elvi Villalobos (POCUS Postgraduate Course Chair)
Dr. Rioloida Diola (POCUS Postgraduate Course Co-chair)

Members:

Members of the PCCP Interventional Pulmonology Council

General Description:

Last November 10, 2025, the APSR Postgraduate Course Committee, in partnership with the Philippine College of Chest Physicians Council on Interventional Pulmonology, conducted a successful Postgraduate Course on Lung and Critical Care Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS). It was an 8-hour combined lecture and hands-on workshop for pre-registered APSR delegates, with focus on thoracic and lung POCUS in relation to the most common pulmonary/critical care pathologies encountered in the Asia Pacific Region.

Course Audience:

The course slots were filled from pre-registered delegates. The course was attended by 99 participants. The audience was a mix of practicing pulmonologists and critical care specialists, fellows-in-training, and general physicians.

General Objectives:

The following table summarizes the Course Programme, together with session objectives and the speakers/facilitators assigned.

Scientific Programme

Time Activity Objectives Speaker
8:30-9:00AM Registration Registration Postgraduate Committee Members

9:30AM-10:00AM General Principles of Chest Point of Care Ultrasound Give a brief history of chest ultrasound and early applications in practiceIntroduce the mechanisms and physics of ultrasoundFamiliarize with the basic technical aspects of ultrasound – knobs, controls, probes, modes, and settingsIdentify indications for chest POCUS, and present current evidence on the use of ultrasound in pulmonary patientsDescribe proper patient identification, preparation, and performance of chest ultrasound   Dr. Nai-Chien Huan   (Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kota Kinabalu Malaysia)
10:00-10:30AM The Chest Ultrasound Syndromes: How to recognize and approach a patient with respiratory complaints Give a brief introduction on the basic lung ultrasound syndromes/ protocols (pneumothorax protocol, consolidation, pulmonary edema, atelectasis, pleural effusion, and ARDS)Present actual and practical examples of how to identify and differentiate these syndromes based on POCUS Present current evidence and applicable clinical guidelines applicable to these different ultrasound scenarios Dr. Yao Wen Kuo   (National Taiwan University)
10:30-11:00AM Basic Critical Care Ultrasound Part 1: Cardiac and Vascular POCUS Give an introduction to  rapid bedside cardiac ultrasound to evaluate a patient with potential cardiac pathology (focus on critically ill patients)Describe practical ultrasound approaches to the most common vascular pathologies in the critical care setting (venous thrombosis and vascular occlusion)Present current evidence in the performance of cardiac/vascular ultrasound and its inclusion in clinical guidelinesDemonstrate step by step approaches to the performance of these bedside ultrasound techniques (cardiac/vascular ultrasound), including the interpretation of ultrasound findings Dr. Jose Donato Magno Chairman, ASEAN Society of Echocardiography, Philippine Heart Association
11:00-11:30AM Basic Critical Care Ultrasound Part 2: Hemodynamic Assessment Present the most common and most important applications of ultrasound in hemodynamic assessmentGive an update of current evidences and guidelines pertaining to ultrasound in the critically illDemonstrate the proper technique of various ultrasound hemodynamic monitoring parameters, including its interpretation and clinical implications Dr. Marie Charisma Laborte   Lung Center of the Philippines/University of Toronto
11:30-12:00PM Introduction to Ultrasound-guided pulmonary procedures (Chest drain insertion and pleural biopsy) Give an in-depth discussion of different pleural pathologies i.e. pleural effusion, pleural thickening, pulmonary masses (focus on ultrasound description and interpretation)Describe different pleural and pulmonary interventions aided by ultrasound, vis-à-vis the current evidence and guidelines regarding their safety and efficacyIllustrate and demonstrate the proper steps in performing the two most common ultrasound-aided procedures of chest drain insertion and pleural biopsy Dr. Nai-Chien Huan
