7-8 November 2012 Shanghai Zhongshan Hospital
The training course of APSREE (APSR-Endorsed ESAP) on sleep medicine was held on 7 – 8 November 2012, at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China. This training course was organized by Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Zhongshan Hospital and Department of Pharmacology of Shanghai Medical College, as well as Shanghai Respiratory Research Institute. Dr Chunxue Bai was the honorary chairman and Drs Shanqun Li and Zhili Huang were the chairs of training course.
This purpose of the training course aimed to deliver talks on diagnosis & treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS), basic research and application of Internet-of-things on sleep breathing disorders (SBD).
Several Key Opinion Leaders (KOL) were invited by the organizing committee to give presentations. Among these speakers, one was from Hong Kong, two from the USA, and one from Japan. Dr Mary Ip Sau Man, the President of APSR, talked about research status of sleep medicine in Asia-Pacific Area at the opening ceremony. Dr Clete Kushida, former President of American Sleep Association, discussed the unusual movement during sleep and preliminary data on APPLE study. Dr Teofilo Lee-Chiong, talked about the management of OSAS in US. Drs Kazuo Chin, Takatoshi Mochizuki, Yoshimasa Koyama and sixteen domestic speakers also gave excellent presentations. Total 300 people, including physicians from all over the mainland of China and students attended the training course and feedback from them showed high appreciation of key topics by world experts on sleep medicine.
This was the first APSR endorsed event on sleep medicine in shanghai, which was also by far the biggest training course on sleep medicine in the mainland of China.
One of the hot topics of the training course was the introduction of application of Internet-of-things on sleep medicine. Epidemiology study showed 1-3% of the population has sleep disorders and monitoring of sleep in the hospital is severely limited. Home based sleep monitoring will be an alternative and efficient approach in providing diagnosis of sleep disorders at community level. Dr Chunxue Bai designed a whole new system using blue-tooth and 3G techniques to collect and analyze data obtained from patients in the community and provide instructions for further therapy. This technique will be broadly used in Shanghai as a new medical model and will be introduced to the whole country after testing.
Another achievement of the training course was the proposal of an agreement on sleep medicine documented by KOL in the field, including Dr May Ip, Clete Kushida, and Teofilo Lee-Chiong and other experts at the training course. This agreement highlighted the state-of-art progress on diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders which will provide practical instructions on clinical management of sleep disorder patients.
