The Forum of International Respiratory Societies highlights five major lung diseases, the “Big 5”, which include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), acute lower respiratory tract infections, lung cancer and tuberculosis. These diseases are among the most common causes of severe illness and death worldwide.

At the APSR 2022 Congress in Seoul, Republic of Korea, a workshop was held which brought together representatives from the APSR, Union APR, WHO SEA Region with the advice of the experts from WHO WPRO to address the “Big 5” and to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) the WHO aims for.

The input was sought from successful groups that would address issues relating to Asthma, COPD, Lung Cancer, Tuberculosis and non-TB infections (the “Big 5”), with a focus on broad applicability to lower-middle income countries.

Toolkit of Primary Care Models

The tool kit is designed for use in low-, lower-middle-, and upper-middle-income countries to optimize the management of the Big 5 lung diseases in primary care environments. It caters to a wide range of stakeholders including hospitals, clinics, nongovernmental organizations, and national or community health with an interest in improving the primary treatment of the Big 5 lung diseases.
